Five Ways to Save on Vacation

vacation, saving tipsWe all know that feeling of being totally broke after spending big on a summer vacation.  Most people splurge while on summer vacations but you don’t have to spend big to enjoy the fun of an all-out summer escape.  Here are five money-saving tips for your big trip that will leave you feeling financially happy when you return home.

  1. Be flexible with transportation options.  Flight tickets are usually cheaper mid-week.  In fact, the two cheapest days to fly are Tuesday and Wednesday.  Consider other modes of transportation aside from flying and driving.  Depending on the distance, time of year, and other factors it may be cheaper to take a train.
  2. Check and double check.  Make a list of everything you’ll need before you begin packing.  Forgetting basics, such as toothpaste, cell phone charger, etc., can waste money because you’ll have to purchase another when you arrive.
  3. Check for coupons.  Using websites and apps such as Groupon, LivingSocial, LocalEats, and KidsEatFree before you hit the road can save you tons on dining, activities, and attractions.  Check for coupons in your vacation destination and plan to visit places that have discounts.
  4. Check your insurance.  Rental car insurance and traveler’s insurance will save you a fortune in the event of an accident but they can also be money-wasters if purchased independently.  Many times, credit card companies, homeowners insurance, or auto clubs will cover both types of insurance.  Check the coverage you already have before buying more.
  5. Beware of souvenirs.  I know you just HAVE to have that t-shirt.  But next week you’ll be shoving it to the bottom of the drawer after you’ve realized it’s actually hideous and not worth wearing unless you’re going for the overzealous tourist look.  While there are some cool souvenirs out there, most are just over priced impulse buys so think those purchases through to save some cash and room in your closet.
